We are pleased to join in the celebrations related to the Latin American Heritage Month in our country during October 2020.
As part of our community outreach, here are some of the events we are proud to host or co-sponsor:
- To kick off the celebrations, on September 30 we host the presentation of “X Marks the Spot”, a report with key insights about the experience of students with Latin American cultural background in the St. George campus of the University of Toronto. This report was written by students enrolled in LAS 401 – Latinos in Toronto – lead by Prof. Berenice Villagomez in Fall 2019, with support from the Innovation Hub. - Profs. Laura Colantoni and Ana Teresa Pérez join “Fuerza Latina” community cultural festival On October 1 to share with the Hispanic community their latest research project about children who grow up bilingual in Spanish and English. They will also publish news of the research in various Hispanic community media outlets.
- In support of the Hispanic Canadian Heritage Council, we co-sponsor a series of conversations with Canadian politicians of Latin American background. (These events are held in Spanish) On October 14, Senator Rosa Gálvez talks about “La mujer latina en la política canadiense”; on October 15, MP Pablo Rodríguez shares his insights on “Identidad, cultura y participación cívica latina en Canadá” and finally, on October 21, MP Soraya Martínez converses on “Canadá y los inmigrantes latinoamericanos”. - We host the book launch of “Peripheral Nerve: Health & Medicine in Cold War Latin America”, edited by Prof. Anne-Emanuelle Birn – member of the Advisory Board of our Latin American Studies program. This volume offers a significant contribution to the history of the Cold War, renews the understandings of how it unfolded in Latin America generally and in the health and medical realms more specifically. - We announce the winner(s) of our first Spanish microfiction contest “El día después” on October 16. The award ceremony on October 30 closes our celebrations.
